Chunks World Local Band Interviews

Prig

Saturday, October 16, 2004

So, this time I sat down to chat with the phenomenon that is Prig. These guys may be some what small in stature but have got gonads as big as bowling balls. Their performance this night was balls to the wall. These guys have a huge sound and a following to match. They come at you with a triple vocal attack. I could see and hear the two stand up front men but it took me a minute to realize that the drummer was the third voice. The guitar player has a unique style and sound and the drummer and bassist are both rock solid. They are consistently one of the biggest draws to Just Bill’s and are one of the most supportive Chunks bands. Their attitudes towards music are true blue but these guys have some interesting views on the world. They are definitely a gem in the Chunks band line up and have seemingly come out of nowhere with their following already intact. They promote each and every gig and it shows. These guys were at no loss for words as far as answering questions. They were all throwing answers at me so I just wrote up their replies as group answers. To me this was another sign that they are a close knit group. Here it is…

Q.Mike - Where did the name Prig come from?

A.Prig – Prig is another name for a purist or a non-conformist. We were originally called Madville, but after our line up change we started the usual process of going through names and found Prig. It fits us perfect.

Q.Mike - Where are you guys from?

A.Prig - We are all from Florissant Mo. and still live there now.

Q.Mike - Were you guys all friends before or did you come together as a band?

A.Prig - 4 of the 5 of us have been friends since we were 5 years old. Our line up change after Madville started about 2 years ago so we have probably officially been together as a whole for about a year and a half.

Q.Mike - What is your favorite place in St. Louis to play?

A.Prig - Just Bill’s by far. It has become our second home. The sound and atmosphere are great here, and we are totally into what Chunks is all about!

Q.Mike - So what do you think of the St. Louis metal scene?

A.Prig - We love it but it could be so much better. It could be stronger if all the people who enjoy metal would just support it more. There are some kick ass metal bands right here with in Chunks, and more and more are joining.

Q.Mike - You guys are yet another Chunks band to come out of nowhere and you draw so big, how do you account for being such a big draw?

A.Prig - We network, flyer, and promote, promote, promote. Like a day before and the day of our shows we’ll call everyone we know and e-mail people to get them to come out. And we put everything that we are into our performance every time to keep people interested. You have to put on a good show! If there is a crowd it’s a good show for us no matter where it is. We practice in a storage shed and that can be a good show if people are there.

So if you just get out there and let people know that you are playing and do a good job when you do play then it’ll all be good. Yeh, for some stupid reason some of the best bands aren’t a good draw.

Q.Mike - What genre would you put Prig’s music into?

A.Prig - Metal, but not death metal or totally hard core metal, we just throw down.

Q.Mike - Who are your influences musically or otherwise?

A.Prig - Musically, there are a lot. Mudvaine, Metallica, Slipknot, Hatebreed, and many more. And away from music, non supporters who criticize just fuel us more!

Q.Mike Do you guys have a demo or a cd out?

A.Prig - We are planning on going into Chunks Studios with Paul Moerke in January to do a 5 or 6 song demo. We have already spoken with him and just need to set a start date. We are saving up our gig money right now to finance it. We just want a good recording to hand out and say, “hey this is us, what the f… do you think?”

Q.Mike - Tell me about one of your songs and what it is about, like a fan favorite.

A.Prig - Final Breath – It’s a song about death and how you might feel when you face it. Also how you might feel about it right now. It was actually an old Madville song that we re-worked after our line up change and made it better. Yeh, almost totally retooled.

Q.Mike - So what is Prig’s song writing process like?

A.Prig - We jam a lot and just throw shit together. We can write a song in 5 or 10 minutes if every one likes it and is feeling it. But if one of us doesn’t like it or can’t get into it then it’s out, start over!

Q.Mike - What are your goals as a band?

A.Prig - Well, like everyone who does this our dream is to make it big but we realize that not very one can. Right now we just want to play and have fun with our friends and other bands. Come on out and have a good time with us. And just the same we are at other band’s shows too because we enjoy the scene and enjoy music. More people should get out here and have a good time. That’s what life is all about. We know that people have to work and get up early and all, but when you can, get your ass off the couch and come out. These Chunks shows are only 5 bucks, that’s the cheapest cover in St. Louis.

Q.Mike – Since it is election time, give me some Prig political views.

A.Prig - Zero…Bush sucks, but Kerry sucks too. We are non-conformists so our vote is for the other, but wait that guy sucks too. Just get out there and vote the way you believe.

Q.Mike - Any last words?

A.Prig –

Dose is the shit!

Chunks is the shit!

Promote more mother f…ers.

Don’t steal, the government doesn’t like competition!

So, there it is short but to the point. If anyone has anything that they would like to know or some ideas on questions or bands for these interviews, just e-mail me at mikeh@chunksofmeat.com and I’ll get them on here.
